What this protocol covers

The federal government has made a new protocol under the Water Act 2007 titled the Murray-Darling Basin Agreement (Schedule D - Processing Interstate and Intervalley Trade) Protocol 2026. The protocol sets rules for processing the trade of water entitlements between states and between irrigation valleys within the Murray-Darling Basin.

Commencement

The protocol came into force on 29 June 2026.
