Overview
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) published an internal policy in November 2025 covering secondary employment and external appointments. The policy sets rules for QBCC employees, the Commissioner, and senior executives who want to take on a second job, run a side business, or accept an external appointment while working for the QBCC.
Scope
This policy applies only to QBCC's own staff. It does not apply to building industry licence holders, contractors, or businesses regulated by the QBCC.
Approval requirement
The policy requires QBCC officers to obtain approval from a delegate before starting any secondary employment. Failure to obtain that approval can result in disciplinary action, referral to the Queensland Police Service or the Crime and Corruption Commission, or criminal prosecution.
Volunteering and conflicts of interest
Where a QBCC employee holds a management position with a volunteer organisation, the policy requires that any conflict of interest be disclosed and managed under the QBCC's Conflict of Interest and Insider Trading Policy.
Key actions
- Seeking a second job or side business: QBCC employees and officers are required to obtain written approval from their relevant delegate before starting. The Ethics, Standards and Complaints unit can be contacted at integrity@qbcc.qld.gov.au for guidance.
- Volunteering in a management role: QBCC employees in this situation are required to disclose and manage any conflict of interest under the QBCC's Conflict of Interest and Insider Trading Policy.
